The profile is clear: the section’s difficulty does not come from calculation, but from evidence tracking, detail control, modal language, causality, negative wording and distinguishing between close paraphrases.

Scope, data source and methodology

The analysis covers the four Reading Skills questions from Q01 to Q04. Although Q03 contains cultural and contextual information, it is not reassigned to a separate General Knowledge section; all four questions remain under Reading Skills in line with the source taxonomy.

Each question is coded by main topic, text type, question format, primary skill, DOK, language and reading load, reasoning load, calculation load, distractor strength, estimated time and final classification.

Methodological boundary

Difficulty scores and estimated times are not official IMAT statistics. They are analytical classifications produced by IMAT Academy Research Lab and should not be interpreted as candidate accuracy rates or recorded solution times.

General profile of the 2025 Reading Skills section

Although Reading Skills is a small section, it is among the densest parts of the test in terms of time and reading load. Two of the four items fall in the High difficulty band and two in the Medium band; none is classified as Low or Very High.

Reading Skills load profile
ComponentAverageComments
Language & Reading Load3.75 / 5The highest average component of the department is marked especially in Q02 and Q04.
Reasoning Load3.00 / 5It comes from synonymization of options with evidence, scope and causative level.
Distractor Strength3.25 / 5Near paraphrase is dominant partially accurate expression and coverage expansion.
Calculation Load1.00 / 5The difficulty of the department is not caused by numerical processing.

Reading and cultural/context architecture

Reading Comprehension creates the main body of the section with three questions. Cultural Knowledge and Contextual Interpretation is represented only by Q03. Therefore, Q03 meets the intention of Reading + General Knowledge search; but on the page a fake separate General Knowledge data set is not created.

Challenge distribution and question-based profile

Q02 is the question of carrying the highest load of the section with 17/25. Q04 15/25, Q01 11/25 and Q03 is 10/25 level. The difficulty in Q02 and Q04 is not alone in length passage; option-to-evidence comes from precision requirement.

Question format and text types

All four issues are in Paragraph-Based Inference format. But the contexts are different: medicine leaflet/scenario, current-affairs text, cultural reference and scientific text.

Language, reading and time profile

Average estimated time is 102.5 seconds and the median is 97.5 seconds. Q02 is estimated at 150 seconds and Q04 at 120 seconds. These values are analyst estimates, not recorded candidate times.

Q02 · Current Affairs and Economics150 sec
Q04 · Scientific non-fiction120 sec
Q01 · Scientific and medical information75 sec
Q03 · Literary and cultural reference65 sec

Language and reading load is 5/5 for Q02, 4/5 for Q04 and 3/5 for Q01 and Q03. The section tests more than reading speed: candidates must determine whether evidence, scope and degree of certainty are preserved across closely worded options.

Proven tracking and paraphrase separation

The main rule of the 2025 Reading Skills section is: it is not enough to look close to the text of a option. Option is protected with self, scope, direction, accuracy and causative degrees in the text.

The possibility in Q01 vs certainty, supported vs unsupported claims in Q02, the disease/prion relationship mapping prefix in Q04. Q03 is a bridge between cultural and contextual inference.

Distractor Architecture

Four dominant distractor types appear in four questions: overgeneralisation, causal overstatement, near-concept confusion and partly correct description. These are often completely incorrect; they add certainty or scope, by adding certainty or scope to an otherwise plausible statement.

These labels are not measured student error frequency. Because candidate option-selection data are unavailable, distractor analysis is based on the semantic and logical structure of the answer choices.

Detailed review by text type

Scientific and medical information: Q01 tests distinctions in modal language, while Q04 examines relationships among kuru, CJD, Alzheimer’s disease and prions. Technical terminology and partly correct options increase the load in Q04.

Current affairs and economics: Q02 asks candidates to identify the statement not supported by a passage about the ICT sector in Apulia. Passage length, numerical details, a negative stem and causal overstatement work together.

Cultural and contextual cues: Q03 combines a reference to Leonardo da Vinci’s writing with the phrase “crocodile tears”. Familiarity with the expression can reduce the load, but an unfamiliar candidate can still answer by using contextual cues.

Item-level analysis of four questions

Q02

Current Affairs and Economics

Difficulty 17/25DOK 3150 sec

The task is to identify the statement not supported by a long ICT and economics passage. A negative stem, multiple numerical details, close paraphrases and causal overstatement make this the section’s most demanding item.

Dominant distractor: Causal overstatement

Q04

Scientific non-fiction

Difficulty 15/25DOK 3120 sec

The technical passage traces relationships among kuru, CJD, Alzheimer’s disease and prions. Candidates must reject causal additions in options that otherwise appear partly correct.

Dominant distractor: Partly correct statement

Q01

Scientific and medical information

Difficulty 11/25DOK 275 sec

The passage distinguishes probability from certainty in language similar to a medicine leaflet. The main risk is interpreting words such as ‘possible’ or ‘may’ as a definite outcome.

Dominant distractor: Overgeneralisation

Q03

Literary and cultural reference

Difficulty 10/25DOK 265 sec

The item combines a reference to Leonardo da Vinci’s writing with the phrase ‘crocodile tears’, requiring both cultural familiarity and contextual inference. Q03 therefore retains Medium Coding Confidence.

Dominant distractor: Near-concept confusion

Coding consistency and transparency note

Q03 Medium Coding Confidence

Q03 can carry lower cognitive load for some candidates due to cultural familiarity. This is why Coding Confidence is preserved as Medium in source report. No Controversy Flag was recorded.

Q04 DOK Level / Score Separation

Knowledge Depth Level for Q04 = 3, but the Knowledge Depth Score = 2 used in Difficulty Index. Level in DOK distribution has been used in the average load profile, the source dataset’s score value is retained unchanged.

Q02 First Review Total 18 is Final / Second Check 17. Q04 First Review Total 14 is Final / Second Check 15. These are internal second-pass analytical corrections; they are not presented as evidence of independent inter-rater agreement.

2025 How to Participate Reading Skills?

2025 Reading Skills has been a part of producing high-time and reading load, although it is only formed from four questions. Half of the section High rise, half DOK 3 level.

The main selectivity is based on understanding the general issue of the text, the level of evidence of claims, its scope and the protection of the causality/cutting line. Plausible statement is not enough; the answer option should remain in the entire passage evidence.

Data-based interests for 2026 candidates

  • Support each answer choice with direct textual evidence.
  • Mark negative question stems clearly before evaluating the options.
  • Distinguish direction and certainty; check modal words separately.
  • For options that claim causality, verify that the passage genuinely supports that relationship.
  • Read every plausible option and reject any statement that lacks textual support.
  • Map the technical relationships in scientific passages briefly before answering.
  • Mark numerical facts in current-affairs passages.
  • Do not rely on general knowledge alone; practise contextual inference as well.

These recommendations are based on the 2025 exam structure; it does not guarantee the future of the same passage thread or distribution in the next test.

Limitations

  • Analytical Difficulty is not the official IMAT metric.
  • Estimated time values are analyst estimates; there is no time to browse.
  • Student-response data, correct rate and option-selection distribution are not available.
  • Distractor strength is not verified by real student behavior.
  • Four questions do not represent all possible types of small sample Reading Skills area.
  • Q03 Medium Coding carries Confidence.
  • Knowledge Depth Level and Knowledge Depth Score in Q04 are source data separation.
  • Two pass QA is not independent inter-rater reliability study.
  • The full copyright passage has not been republished.
