Introduction and purpose of work

Only YKS is one of the most frequently asked questions of candidates who are prepared and performing a separate study program specific to IMAT.

YKS preparation requires a wide range of topics, intensive treatment practice and long-term exam durability. However, IMAT creates a separate test profile due to academic English, conceptual interpretation, logical interest, time management and a different negative score system. Therefore, it is important to examine the YKS infrastructure through numerical data, which can be transferred to IMAT performance.

This study examines the performance of students who have not started in a preparation process specific to IMAT on the measurement date. The aim is to evaluate the performance change observed in the science and reasoning sections of the IMAT infrastructure and the dictionary-supported condition.

The sample of the research consists of 1.017 students in the 2025 YKS numerical ranking. Two English IMAT trials were applied to participants in the same format. The first trial is performed in the standard test conditions, while the second trial is provided in the supported condition allowed to use the dictionary. The study examines points and part performance differences between these two conditions and should be evaluated as evidence of direct causality alone. Personal information has not been included in the report to protect student privacy.

cognitive and structural comparison of YKS and IMAT exams

YKS and IMAT are different in terms of time, question structure, language, subject scope and scoring system if candidates evaluate basic sciences and numerical intelligence skills. These differences make the transfer of information and strategies developed for a test directly to other exams, but depend on certain conditions.

YKS requires wide range of subjects, processing intensity, long test duration and detailed curriculum information. IMAT makes academic English texts quick interpretation, extracting from the information given, conceptual domination in basic sciences and decision-making skills more visible. Therefore, a powerful YKS infrastructure can provide an advantage in some scientific parts of IMAT, but this advantage is necessary to adapt to the test language and the question format.

Scoring systems also differentiate the question solving strategies of candidates. The correct answer at IMAT is +1.5 points, the wrong answer -0,4 points and the blank answer is 0 points. For example, 45 accurate, 10 incorrect and 5 idle candidates get 63,5 points. The risk management due to negative scoring and the decision to release the question when necessary plays an important role in the performance of IMAT. However, the qualification for the admission of a certain score may vary according to the test year, university, contenjan type and candidate pool.

IMAT performance of students who are prepared only YKS

Students in this group focused on exams in MEB curriculum and ÖSYM format, a separate preparation of English science terminology, logic questions or exam strategy in measurement history. Therefore, especially academic English, fast text resolution and IMAT-specific decision-making strategies are the main areas where students can encounter.

After YKS, two English IMAT trials were applied to IMAT Academy. The standard exam rules were kept valid in the first trial; students are allowed to use dictionary in the second trial. The second condition is designed as a supported performance measurement that students can access scientific concepts and question roots. This comparison reveals the score change observed with dictionary access; it does not only connect the entire difference to English qualification.

In the sample, the overall performance was increased in the condition supported by the dictionary. The average profile corresponds to 46,5 points with 35 accurate, 15 wrong and 10 blanks in the first trial; 39 accurate in the second trial, 11 incorrect and 10 free with 54,1 points. Thus, between two applications 7,6 points were observed. These results indicate that language and terminology access may be associated with IMAT performance. However, the use of dictionary should not be reduced to a single reason that the difference may affect the level of understanding, as well as the behavior of response trust, duration use, and false response.

Conclusion

YKS infrastructure can supply a specific starting advantage in scientific parts of IMAT. However, 7,6 points difference observed between standard condition and dictionary-supported condition in sample suggests that access to the test language and terminology may be an important element associated with performance. The findings indicate that only YKS preparation is equivalent to IMAT; unlike academic English, test format, logic questions and risk management, IMAT refers to the importance of specific work.

Limitations

  • This study does not represent all the selected YKS students randomly; the sample consists of only students who are located in the range of 50,000-100.000 in 2025 YKS numerical rankings and apply to IMAT Academy.
  • Since Dictionary-supported trial does not reflect actual IMAT conditions, these scores should be evaluated as an estimate of the official test performance.
  • The application sequence may be affected by the difference between two conditions of variables, such as familiarity to the second trial, time use and response trust.
  • The results are observational and are not enough for direct reasoning.
  • Results are specific to this student group and two trials.

FAQ

Is it enough for IMAT only ready for YKS?

This study shows that YKS infrastructure can provide a certain starting advantage in the scientific parts of IMAT. However, the findings do not show that only YKS preparation is equivalent to IMAT; academic English, test format, logic questions and risk management should also work specific to IMAT.

Does Dictionary-supported trial represent real IMAT conditions?

No. Since Dictionary-supported trial does not reflect actual IMAT conditions, these scores should be evaluated as an estimate of the official test performance. The second condition was used to study the change of the score observed with the access of the dictionary.

Convert analysis to your own preparation plan

YKS infrastructure allows IMAT to start from scratch, but the difference between standard condition and dictionary-supported condition also shows the importance of preparation to the test language, terminology and the strategy specific to IMAT.
