How to Prepare for IMAT?

IMAT preparation is not simply about completing the syllabus. Establish your starting point, integrate scientific English into problem solving, measure progress regularly and update your plan after each assessment. The 23-week plan in this guide is a framework you can adapt to your starting level and weekly study time. Review the IMAT exam format and explore the IMAT syllabus and question distribution before planning your work.

First Step of IMAT Preparation: English and Scientific Terminology

Treat scientific English within the subject you are studying, not as a separate waiting period. While learning a concept, note its English equivalent, how it is used in the question stem, and how it differs from similar options in the same study session.

For terms such as cell membrane, equilibrium, inference and assumption, record the term together with the topic note, the question stem and why a distractor may appear attractive. Candidates with a YKS background can review the methods and limitations discussed in the Research Lab study on YKS foundations and IMAT language.

Scientific terminology

Knowing the English equivalents of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics concepts directly affects the speed of solving questions.

Understanding question stems

Question phrases such as which of the following, most likely, cannot be inferred, supports, weakens should be practiced regularly.

Speed reading and option analysis

Practice regularly to read English text quickly and understand the difference between options correctly.

Initial diagnosis: four questions before diving into the plan

The first step does not have to be the same full-length test for everyone. Build a starting picture of your topic knowledge, question-language skills, timing and attention using a short section assessment or a suitable mock test.

  1. In which courses is there a predominance of subject deficiencies?
  2. What question stems or scientific terms slow down reading?
  3. In which part are you losing time?
  4. How much regular study time can you actually dedicate each week?

Topic gaps

Not knowing a topic and being unable to apply known information are different needs.

Scientific language

Review terminology within both the topic you are studying and its question stems.

Realistic timing

Narrow or expand the plan according to the weekly study time you can sustain.

23-Week IMAT Preparation Roadmap

Use the 23-week roadmap as a decision framework rather than a rigid calendar. Make clear gaps visible in the first weeks, classify checkpoint errors by knowledge, attention, time and question type, then turn mock-test data into targeted topic review.

When you're running out of time, prioritize repetitive error-inducing tasks and brief review of topics you've studied recently. When you have more time, instead of adding new resources, add solution notes, re-solutions and time tracking.

For a detailed subject-by-subject sequence, use the biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, logical reasoning and reading skills guides.

Turn mock-test errors into next week's priorities

The value of a mock test lies not only in the overall result but in how it changes the next stage of study. For each incorrect or unanswered question, record the reason: knowledge, conceptual application, question-language comprehension, attention or condition tracking, or time.

Representative plan adaptation example

This is not an example student result; It is meant to show how to make decisions.

Choose up to two main priorities for the following week. To review error types alongside the methodology and its limitations, consult the 2025 IMAT question analysis and methodology. This publication does not contain student performance data.

Who is this 23-week plan suitable for?

A 20–24 week plan provides a balanced framework for most students. However, the content of the plan should vary from person to person.

Students with strong foundations can move to intensive mock-test practice and gap-closing sooner.

Students with basic deficiencies or aiming for a high cut-off should study longer and in a controlled manner.

The most important aspect of the plan is weekly measurement and analysis; The same plan should not be kept constant.

If English terminology is weak, English reading and vocabulary study should be added, even if subject knowledge is strong.

Why is IMAT preparation different from classical exam preparation?

Unlike conventional high-school exams, IMAT requires students to apply knowledge in English, under time pressure and across different question types. Subject knowledge, English comprehension, question strategy, time management and mock-test analysis should therefore be developed together.

English reading comprehension

Reading the text quickly, catching the main idea and making inferences. Mere vocabulary knowledge is not enough.

logical reasoning

Recognizing question patterns, developing elimination strategies and reducing attention errors.

Core science knowledge

Biology and chemistry carry substantial weight, while mathematics and physics also affect the total score. Manage all four subjects together.

Time management

Departmental prioritization and strategic transition ability. Equal time is not allocated to each question.

Mock-test analysis

Classify mistakes by knowledge, attention, time and question type.

Target cut-off

Cut-off trends at target universities affect preparation priorities and application planning.

Common mistakes in IMAT preparation

The biggest problem in IMAT preparation is often not not studying, but studying in the wrong way. Even if the student solves hundreds of questions, if he does not keep track of which subject, which question type, and for what reason he made a mistake, his progress will remain limited.

“Studying only biology and chemistry”

When reading, logic, mathematics and physics are neglected, the overall score and university choice can be seriously affected.

“neglecting English terminology”

Knowing the subject in Turkish is not enough. It is necessary to be familiar with the English equivalents of terms such as 'cell membrane', 'equilibrium', 'inference', 'rate'.

“Considering solving many questions is enough”

Seeing the reason for the mistakes and updating the study plan accordingly is at least as important as the number of questions.

“Looking at the test result only as a score”

A useful mock-test analysis should show the topic, section, time and error type together.

“Cut-off trendlerini hesaba katmamak”

The cut-off trends of target universities in recent years directly affect the preparation strategy and choice planning.

“Working without a plan”

Without weekly goals, a rep plan, and regular practice, preparation loses direction.

“Leaving mock tests until too late”

Mock tests are central to preparation, not merely a final step. Tests taken early provide valuable data.

“Trying to allocate equal time to each question”

Marking and returning to questions that take a long time makes it easier to see where the time loss occurred after the attempt.

Time management and strategic decision making

Time management means using mock tests to learn which questions to continue, skip temporarily or return to later. Recording where one question consumed too much time makes the following week's practice more targeted.

Also consult official announcements for current exam rules and scoring. The study suggestions here focus on making recurring errors and sources of lost time visible after each mock test.

Collect easy questions first

Quickly answer the questions you know; reduces time pressure.

Don't skip difficult questions

Mark and skip the questions that take a long time and come back in the remaining time.

Record your decisions

Review the questions you skipped or returned to after the mock test.

Examine the elimination logic

Make the reason for your decision between options visible with a short note.

IMAT preparation resources: choose according to need

Choose resources according to the need they address, not by quantity. Starting several resources for the same purpose can leave less time to review mock-test notes.

Match each resource to a specific need. Use topic-based question practice to close knowledge gaps, the official IMAT past papers to study previous questions, and the mock-test analysis guide to measure progress. For scientific terminology, StudyCast can provide concise revision support without replacing topic study or question practice.

3 Ways to Prepare with IMAT Academy

Not every IMAT student needs the same preparation model. There are three different preparation paths at IMAT Academy, depending on your level, study style and the support you need.

1. Group Lessons + IMAT Academy Platform

The group program started in November and is planned to last approximately 10 months; IMAT offers a total of 200 hours of live education in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics courses. Students enrolled in the program also access the preparation platform.

  • Realistic IMAT mock tests and thousands of practice questions
  • Analysis tools that reveal weak areas
  • Video lesson series, StudyCast and other preparation resources
  • IMAT Academy's University Predictor, which combines platform performance with university and application planning

2. IMAT Academy Platform + Private Lessons

This is a targeted path for students who do not need a full group programme but want individual support with specific topics. Use the platform independently, identify gaps through mock tests and analysis, then plan private lessons according to your needs.

  • Identify weak topics through mock tests and analysis
  • Choose lessons by subject, time and instructor using the platform-supported booking model
  • Individual support focused on your needs
Check out IMAT Academy Private Tutoring System

3. IMAT Academy Platform Only

It is a way of independent study for students who have good subject knowledge and English, and who need IMAT-specific content and regular practice.

  • IMAT mock tests, practice questions and analysis tools
  • Video lessons and StudyCast
  • University Predictor and other platform preparation resources
  • Planned, independent preparation at your own pace
Explore Platform Features

There is no one model of preparation for everyone. You can choose the path that suits you between structured group training, needs-based private lessons or platform-based independent preparation.

How many months does it take to prepare for IMAT?

Preparation time varies depending not only on subject knowledge, but also on English reading speed, question type habit, and the competitive level of the target university.

3 months or less

It can be a busy period only for students who have strong foundations, good English reading skills and can solve tests regularly. In this process, it is more important to quickly identify weak areas and improve time management rather than learning the subject.

4–6 months

For many students, this provides a balanced period for topic review, English terminology, question practice and regular mock tests.

7–9 months or more

This may be safer for students with foundational gaps, limited English terminology or a high target cut-off. Subject foundations, English study and mock-test analysis should progress together.

The most accurate time should be determined after seeing the student's first attempt result and subject-based analysis.

How should the weekly IMAT study plan be implemented?

An effective IMAT week should combine topic study, English terminology practice and mock-test analysis.

Day 1

Full mock test or section test

Measure current performance.

Day 2

Mock-test analysis

Classify mistakes by knowledge, attention, time and question type.

Days 3–4

Close topic-based gaps

Targeted topic study and IMAT questions on weak areas revealed by the analysis.

Day 5

English terminology and reading practice

Practise scientific terms, question stems and reading speed.

Day 6

Mixed question practice

Practise exam-style passages with mixed questions from different sections.

Day 7

Review and update the plan

Set priorities for the next week using the week's data.

This structure may vary depending on the student's level; but each week must include measurement, analysis and targeted practice.

Make IMAT preparation manageable

Uncertainty in IMAT preparation tires the student: not knowing what to study, not being able to see which subject is missing, not being aware of the lack of English terminology, and not being able to keep track of how close it is to the target university makes the preparation inefficient. The aim of IMAT Academy is to reduce this uncertainty and turn student preparation into a measurable system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I start with IMAT preparation?

The best way to start IMAT preparation is to measure your current level with a test that follows the exam format. It should show not only the total score but also section-level performance. Then identify weak topics and question types and build a weekly study plan. If scientific English terminology is a weakness, include it from the first week.

Is just studying the subject sufficient for IMAT?

No. Subject knowledge is important, but IMAT also requires students to use that knowledge quickly and accurately in English. Reading comprehension, reasoning, time management and mock-test strategy are integral parts of preparation.

Why is English level important for IMAT?

Reviewing scientific terms, question stems, and differences between answer choices within each topic helps improve reading comprehension and problem-solving skills together.

Is the Turkish high school curriculum sufficient for IMAT?

IMAT subjects are based on the basic science infrastructure at the high school level. Turkish students who have a solid knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics can prepare for IMAT. However, there are two important differences: the exam language is English and the question types are different from Turkish high school exams. Therefore, it is necessary to study English terminology and IMAT question format separately.

When should I take IMAT mock tests?

Use mock tests from the beginning of preparation, not only near the exam. The first attempt establishes your level; later attempts measure progress and help update the study plan. Add regular full-length mock tests during the middle stage of preparation.

Is the 23-week IMAT plan suitable for everyone?

A 20–24 week plan provides a balanced framework for many students, but starting level, English reading speed and target university differ. Students with strong foundations may reach the strategy stage sooner, while those with fundamental gaps should allow more time. Personalise the framework using the first mock-test results.

Why is a weekly plan important in IMAT preparation?

A weekly plan turns preparation into concrete goals, but it should not remain fixed. Update it each week using mock-test results and topic-level analysis.

Are general resources sufficient for IMAT?

General resources can support foundational knowledge. However, IMAT-specific question language, time pressure and scoring mean that students should also practise with IMAT-format mock tests and topic-based IMAT questions.

Turn IMAT preparation into a measurable system.

Organize your study plan with initial diagnosis, review, targeted practice and error notes.
