IMAT Physics Study Guide

IMAT Physics measures the ability to use basic models in the topics of motion, force, energy, fluids, thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism. A successful solution often relies more on choosing the correct model, converting the given data into appropriate units, and physically checking the result than on long calculations.

Although the number of Physics questions is lower than Biology and Chemistry, each correct answer contributes to the total score. The 2023–2026 table shows past unit weights; it does not guarantee the distribution of the next exam.

High-yield unit summary

Across 2023–2026, Translational Mechanics has the highest total. Foundations and Kinematics and Circuits and Magnetism follow, while Rotational and Oscillatory Motion and Thermodynamics also require regular review. Kinematics and a sound command of units and vectors underpin mechanics questions.

How should you study IMAT Physics?

  1. 1

Bring the basics of units, vectors, graphs, and proportional reasoning to an automatic level in the initial stage.

  2. 2

In every problem, define the system, write the knowns with symbols, and only then choose the equation.

  3. 3

Learn to solve mechanics topics separately using free body diagrams, energy approach, and momentum approach.

  4. 4

In electricity questions, indicate the direction, series/parallel connection, and measurement points on the drawing.

Unit-by-unit study strategy

The following unit titles summarize the scope and the approach to prioritize in each area. You can open the available detailed unit guides from the cards.

Common mistakes

  • Using centimeter, kilometer, or gram values without converting them to SI units.
  • Confusing speed with velocity or distance with displacement.
  • Deciding about the force or circuit direction without drawing a diagram.
  • Not checking the mathematically obtained result in terms of magnitude, sign, and unit.

How should practice questions be used?

Separate the mistakes into not knowing the formula, model selection, diagram, algebra, and unit conversion.

Solve the same question first symbolically, then numerically to see the ratio between the variables.

Measure which problem can be solved quickly with short-term mixed sets and which one should be left for last.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorize all the formulas for IMAT Physics?

It is necessary to recognize the formulas; however, merely memorizing them is not enough without understanding under which conditions they are valid, their units, and the relationship between the variables.

Can physics be left for last because there are few questions?

The order in the study plan may vary depending on the person. However, completely neglecting physics questions reduces the total score opportunity; fundamental models should be maintained with regular short reviews.

Does past distribution predict future Physics questions?

No. The table is only the classification of the 2023–2026 exams and provides context for study priorities.
