Foundations and Kinematics for IMAT Physics
Foundations and Kinematics establishes the measurement language used in Physics questions and the mathematical definition of motion. SI units, vectors/scalars, displacement, velocity, and acceleration concepts are the common foundation of subsequent mechanics units.
In IMAT questions, difficulty often arises not from long calculations but from confusing distance with displacement, speed with velocity, or graph slope with the meaning of area. It is necessary to be able to convert motion between equations, diagrams, and graphs.

What does this unit cover?
Treat the headings not as independent memorization lists, but as concepts that work within the same biological system. The aim should be to be able to explain together the structure of a concept, where it occurs, and how it will be affected when another process changes.
- SI base and derived units
- Scientific notation and unit conversion
- Scalars and vectors
- Distance and displacement
- Speed and velocity
- Acceleration
- Uniform and uniformly accelerated motion
- Position–time and velocity–time graphs
- Free-fall basics
Why is it important for IMAT?
It can make inferences about direction, velocity, or acceleration from the motion graph.
It queries whether a quantity is consistent in terms of unit and dimension.
He/She can eliminate options using relative changes and proportional reasoning without using equations.
High-yield subtopics
- SI units
- Vectors and scalars
- Displacement
- Velocity
- Acceleration
- Motion graphs
- Uniform acceleration
- Free fall
How does IMAT ask this question?
Instead of only looking for the definition in the question stem, identify the given variable, the processes being compared, and the desired cause–effect relationship.
- Unit conversion
- Graph slope/area interpretation
- Average vs instantaneous quantity
- Vector direction reasoning
- Constant-acceleration calculation
- Free-fall comparison
Common traps
- To consider distance and displacement as the same
- Interpreting negative velocity as slowing down
- Assuming that acceleration is also zero at the moment of zero velocity
- Mistaking the height of the position–time graph for speed
- using km/h and m/s values without converting
How should this unit be studied?
- 1
First, clarify on a brief summary the quantities used, SI units, and basic concepts.
- 2
Define the system in every problem; write the given information with symbols and draw a diagram or graph if necessary.
- 3
Instead of selecting the formula from memory, explain which physical principle applies and the assumptions.
- 4
Practice proportional reasoning and unit conversion by mixing conceptual questions with calculation questions.
- 5
Classify the mistakes as concept, formula selection, algebra, direction/sign, unit conversion, or graph interpretation.
Practice focus
Do not only track the number of correct answers in practice sets. Record whether each mistake is due to concepts, English terminology, process order, data interpretation, or carelessness; plan your next review according to this type of error.
- SI-unit conversions
- Position–time graphs
- Velocity–time graphs
- Vector components basics
- Constant acceleration
- Free-fall reasoning

Should kinematics formulas be memorized?
Basic equations must be known; however, memorization is not enough without understanding under which conditions they are valid and their correspondence on the graph.
When velocity is negative, does the object slow down?
It is not mandatory. The negative sign indicates direction; consider the directions of velocity and acceleration together for speeding up or slowing down.
Can the unit be skipped due to low frequency?
A low frequency in the 2023–2026 distribution does not mean that this topic falls outside the IMAT syllabus. Because the Physics section contains relatively few questions, each unit should be studied in proportion with attention to its question types.
