Thermodynamics for IMAT Physics
Physics Thermodynamics examines energy transfer through temperature, heat, specific heat, phase changes, ideal gases, and the first law. Although there are common terms with Chemistry Thermodynamics, here macroscopic systems and energy conservation are prominent.
IMAT questions may ask to interpret the difference between heat and temperature, the thermal equilibrium between two substances, or the relationship between pressure/volume/temperature when gas variables change. The sign convention and system boundary should be clearly stated.

A total of 3 questions were classified from 2023 to 2026. Its absence in 2025 and 2026 does not mean that it falls outside the syllabus; energy conservation and gas-law reasoning are fundamental Physics tools.
What does this unit cover?
Treat the headings not as independent memorization lists, but as concepts that work within the same biological system. The aim should be to be able to explain together the structure of a concept, where it occurs, and how it will be affected when another process changes.
- Temperature and thermal equilibrium
- Heat transfer
- Specific heat capacity
- Calorimetry basics
- Phase changes and latent heat
- Ideal gas variables
- First law of thermodynamics
- Conduction, convection and radiation
Why is it important for IMAT?
It interprets the heat flow direction and the final equilibrium temperature.
Mass, specific heat, and temperature change require proportional reasoning.
Gas process or first-law scenario investigates the relationship between work, heat, and internal energy.
High-yield subtopics
- Heat vs temperature
- Specific heat
- Phase changes
- Latent heat
- Ideal gas basics
- First law
- Heat transfer
How does IMAT ask this question?
Instead of only looking for the definition in the question stem, identify the given variable, the processes being compared, and the desired cause–effect relationship.
- Calorimetry calculation
- Heating curve interpretation
- Gas-law proportionality
- First-law sign reasoning
- Heat-transfer comparison
- Phase-change graph
Common traps
- To consider heat and temperature as the same quantity
- Thinking that the temperature continuously increases during a phase change
- Assuming it heats up faster if the specific heat is high
- Using the Celsius value in the gas-law ratio
- Confusing the work done on the system with the work sign performed by the system
How should this unit be studied?
- 1
First, clarify on a brief summary the quantities used, SI units, and basic concepts.
- 2
Define the system in every problem; write the given information with symbols and draw a diagram or graph if necessary.
- 3
Instead of selecting the formula from memory, explain which physical principle applies and the assumptions.
- 4
Practice proportional reasoning and unit conversion by mixing conceptual questions with calculation questions.
- 5
Classify the mistakes as concept, formula selection, algebra, direction/sign, unit conversion, or graph interpretation.
Practice focus
Do not only track the number of correct answers in practice sets. Record whether each mistake is due to concepts, English terminology, process order, data interpretation, or carelessness; plan your next review according to this type of error.
- Calorimetry
- Heating curves
- Phase changes
- Ideal-gas proportionality
- First law
- Heat-transfer mechanisms

What is the main difference between heat and temperature?
Temperature shows the microscopic thermal state; heat is the energy transferred due to temperature difference.
Is Kelvin necessary in gas law questions?
The absolute temperature ratio should be used in gas-law calculations in Kelvin; Celsius should not be directly used in ratios.
Does having no classified questions in 2025 and 2026 reduce the importance of the unit?
A low frequency in the 2023–2026 distribution does not mean that this topic falls outside the IMAT syllabus. Because the Physics section contains relatively few questions, each unit should be studied in proportion with attention to its question types.
