Chemistry of Life for IMAT Biology
Chemistry of Life explains which molecules biological systems are made of and the structure–function relationship of these molecules. Topics such as water properties, carbon compounds, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids form the common language of cell biology.
In terms of IMAT, the goal is not to memorize long biochemistry details; it is to be able to interpret the effect of a change in molecular structure on solubility, membrane behavior, enzyme activity, or energy storage. This unit lays the foundation for the subsequent Biology topics.

It appeared regularly, with 9 questions classified across 2023–2026. Since the distribution is balanced, macromolecules and enzyme logic should be studied together rather than focusing on a single subheading.
What does this unit cover?
Treat the headings not as independent memorization lists, but as concepts that work within the same biological system. The aim should be to be able to explain together the structure of a concept, where it occurs, and how it will be affected when another process changes.
- Water polarity, hydrogen bonding and implications for life
- Carbon skeletons and functional groups
- Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids
- Monomer–polymer relationship; condensation and hydrolysis
- Enzyme structure, specificity and reaction rate
Why is it important for IMAT?
It distinguishes options that require deducing function from the structure of a molecule.
It can have the enzyme graph or experimental setup interpret the result of changes in temperature, pH, and substrate.
It provides the basic chemical concepts used in cell membrane, respiration, and gene expression questions.
High-yield subtopics
- Water properties
- Carbon compounds
- Carbohydrates and lipids
- Protein structure and function
- Nucleic acids
- Enzymes as proteins
- Molecular structure–function logic
How does IMAT ask this question?
Instead of only looking for the definition in the question stem, identify the given variable, the processes being compared, and the desired cause–effect relationship.
- Comparing the structure and functions of macromolecules
- Interpreting the change in enzyme activity in an experiment
- Establishing cause–effect through molecular bond or polarity
- Determining the order of monomer, polymer, and hydrolysis
- Selecting the correct biological function from the molecular properties in the table
Common traps
- Assuming that every lipid has an energy-storage function
- Treating protein denaturation and peptide-bond breaking as the same process
- Thinking that an enzyme changes the direction of equilibrium
- Confusing the strength of a hydrogen bond with that of a covalent bond
- Limiting the differences between DNA and RNA to the name of the sugar
How should this unit be studied?
- 1
First, review the basics of atoms, bonds, polarity, and functional groups.
- 2
Compare macromolecules in a single table in terms of building blocks, bond types, functions, and locations.
- 3
Work on the enzyme mechanism with process map and simple rate graphs.
- 4
Solve short topic sets; write which molecular property each wrong option contradicts.
- 5
Review your wrong diary with the Cell Structure and Cellular Energetics links.
Practice focus
Do not only track the number of correct answers in practice sets. Record whether each mistake is due to concepts, English terminology, process order, data interpretation, or carelessness; plan your next review according to this type of error.
- Macromolecule comparison questions
- Enzyme inhibition and rate graph interpretations
- Experiment inference based on water properties
- Structure–function mappings
- Terminology in short English scientific texts

Is detailed organic chemistry necessary for Chemistry of Life?
In IMAT preparation, the focus should be on the basic structure and function of biological molecules. Prioritize the structure–function logic over memorizing detailed reaction mechanisms beyond the official syllabus.
Should enzymes be studied in this unit or within Cellular Energetics?
It is used in both units. First, establish the protein structure and enzyme mechanism here; then apply it in the processes of respiration and photosynthesis.
Are the 9 questions from past exams a target for next year?
No. This number only shows the 2023–2026 classification and does not guarantee the future exam distribution.
